No. 88, February 11, 2020

The World Health Organization (WHO) held a press conference about the new coronavirus at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 10th. WHO officials noted that the Chinese health system is well established and has provided effective treatment for a large number of patients in the new coronavirus outbreak.

Michael Ryan, head of WHO's health emergency program: The Chinese health system is well-established and can provide a high level of intensive care. Considering that 90 to 100 percent of patients in hospitals currently require supplemental oxygen, 20 to 25 percent require intensive care, and 5 to 10 percent require some level of mechanical ventilation (ventilator) therapy, this all places extremely high demands on the health system. To keep so many patients alive is a tremendous achievement. If the disease had appeared in areas with weaker health systems that did not have such treatment capacity, perhaps it would not have been as it is now, for China has a well-established health system, and most patients have mild symptoms.

WHO said that China currently creates an excellent period for the world to prevent the epidemic. In addition, WHO will hold a global research and innovation forum on the new coronavirus in Geneva on the 11th and 12th, to coordinate global research efforts and identify research priorities to overcome the new coronavirus and find targeted treatment and vaccines as soon as possible.

The World Health Organization announced that an advance team of international experts selected by the WHO has arrived in China and will work closely with Chinese experts to address the outbreak.
