No. 182, March 4, 2020

A novel virus fusion research team (CEVI fusion research team) led by the Korea Chemical Research Institute has discovered antibodies that can fight the new coronavirus (COVID-19), Yonhap News Agency said on April 4. The team said that the structure of the stinger protein of the new coronavirus is very similar to that of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and SARS, and has confirmed that the neutralizing antibody of the latter can bind to it. The research team analyzed the structural information file of the neocoronavirus stinger protein published on the bioscience preprint website "bioRxiv" and predicted that two neutralizing antibodies of SARS and one neutralizing antibody of MERS could bind to the neocoronavirus stinger protein, which is expected to contribute to vaccine development. The above findings were published in bioRxiv on the 27th of last month. The research team also obtained the novel coronavirus strain from the Department of Disease Management and successfully obtained ribonucleic acid (RNA) last month.

No. 191, March 9, 2020

It’s estimated that the global epidemic continues at least until June, said academician Zhong Nanshan. The focus of the prevention and control of the new coronavirus will shift from exported cases to imported cases in the future. As there are lots of international exchanges in Guangdong, it is necessary to strengthen the measures of border inspection and border detection, and to adopt quarantine measures for those who come to China. For countries with serious epidemics, Guangdong may have to provide foreign assistance, including protection, reagents, and treatment techniques.

At 4 p.m. today, Guangdong Province held a routine press conference on epidemic prevention and control, where Zhong Nanshan said that the predicted end of the current epidemic in June is to be expected. Coronaviruses are less active in the summer when temperatures are higher. But it also depends on how much attention each country pays. If some countries do not pay attention to the danger and contagiousness of the epidemic, the end time is not easy to say. The current mortality rate is about 6% in Italy and over 2.9% in the United States. Italy, in particular, is also facing a shortage of medical resources.
