On March 26, 2020, leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) convened an extraordinary summit to coordinate multilateral response to the pandemic. It is the first virtual conference in the history of the G20. Leaders of G20 member countries and some non-G20 countries such as Spain, Switzerland and Singapore attended the meeting. After the meeting, the leaders issued a joint statement saying that the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic demonstrates the global connectivity and vulnerability. Viruses know no borders and transparent, robust, coordinated, large-scale and science-based global action is required to fight the epidemic in a spirit of solidarity.
Chinese President Xi Jinping put forth four proposals at the summit: First, we need to be resolute in fighting an all-out global war against the COVID-19 outbreak. Second, we need to make a collective response for control and treatment at the international level. Third, we need to support international organizations in playing their active roles. Fourth, we need to enhance international macro-economic policy coordination.
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the Covid-19 epidemic is a global crisis that demands a global response. He called on the G20 to "fight, unite and ignite" in the fight against the epidemic.
The impact of the epidemic goes far beyond the health sector itself, as it concerns the safety of human life and health as well as global economic and social development. No country can stand alone in the face of the epidemic. The G20 members plan to inject more than $5 trillion into the global economy and pledge to continue to do everything in their power to use all available policy tools to reduce the economic and social damage caused by the pandemic, restore global growth, maintain market stability, and increase economic resilience. They will also work to address the disruptions to international trade caused by the pandemic in order to safeguard the health and well-being of all people.
As an important international platform in the field of global health, Global Health Forum of Boao Forum for Asia will strengthen cooperation with the World Health Organization, relevant countries and international institutions, and play an important role as a platform focusing on the international community's most concerned and urgent issues, such as global governance in the field of health, international cooperation in responding to major health threats, and international cooperation in disaster emergency relief, in order to build global consensus and establish an international public health cooperation system to fight the epidemic.
In the face of the rapid spread of the global epidemic, Global Health Forum of Boao Forum for Asia calls on all sectors of the international community to uphold the concept of the community of shared future, work together, strengthen cooperation, and join hands to win the war against the epidemic with determination!
